RecycleMania!

MCC has risen to the challenge for RecycleMania! We have seen a dramatic increase in recyclable material in recycle bins across campus. If your regular bin or temporary bins are overflowing, please contact Dianne Feyerherm at 299-8843 or by email at the physical plant and she can arrange to have the materials picked up on a more frequent basis during RecycleMania. Here are several things to keep in mind:

  1. If you have large quantities of recyclables, please drop them off in the yellow Sunbright recycling dumpsters on campus. That will help reduce the load we are seeing in smaller recycling containers around campus. These dumpsters are located as follows: 1 is in Parking lot P, 1 is at the MAC building doc, and two are located behind the LTC.
  2. Please keep your glass separate and bring them to the New Science Building. If there isn't room, drop them off with Lori Caceras in SB 111 and she will let me know to pick them up.
  3. Mark your calendars for the following campus recycling events:

Campus Recycling Event: Friday after Spring Break (3/18/11) from 8 am - 1 pm in the MAC parking lot. You can bring recyclables from home and so can our students! Just collect it over Spring Break and bring it to us that day.

Campus Shred Day: April 1st from 8:30 am - 10:30 am in the MAC parking lot. You can bring reasonable amounts of items from home to be shredded!

Tree USA Volunteering Event: Thursday, April 21st from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Meet in front of the New Science Building by the fountains.

RecycleMania

Last year, we recycled 20,037 pounds of material in 10 weeks! MCC wants to exceed that number by 10% this year and we can do it with your help!

Feel free to bring your recyclables from home so they can be counted in the competition. To help facilitate this effort, we are having the following two special events:

  • Campus Recycling Day on Friday, March 18th from 8 am – 1 pm in the main MAC parking lot where we hosted the last MCC Shred Day; and
  • Campus Shred Day on Friday, April 1st from 8:30 am – 10:30 am in the main MAC parking lot.

The Sustainability Committee is asking for your help in bringing the following products in to Campus for RecycleMania

  • paper;
  • plastics;
  • metals;
  • corrugated boxes;
  • cardboard;
  • old phone books;
  • magazines; and
  • glass to campus.

Single stream recycling containers can accept all clean recyclables EXCEPT for glass products. An individual recycling bin for glass has been put in the main foyer of the new Science Building.

RecycleMania

RecycleMania is a friendly 10 week competition between colleges and universities across the nation who get ranked based on the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, and the least amount of trash per capita of their campus population. MCC is competing in the Benchmark Category and we are taking our college to the next competition level in terms of reporting specific weights for bottles, card board, paper, and food wastes along with total single stream recycling which is what MCC primarily does. Here is the website to the competition overview: http://www.recyclemaniacs.org/overview.htm

MCC needs your help with RecycleMania. Here is what you can do:

  • Recycle any paper, plastic, cans, card-board, and corrugated boxes into your single-stream bins from now thru April 2nd. There are large trashcans on most floors of most buildings for recycling. Any of the yellow dumpsters on campus are single stream recycling units as well.
  • Deliver any glass you have to the Science Building and leave in the main foyer of the science building in a blue recycle bin labeled as Glass. The glass container will be available starting Valentine’s Day. Environmental Science students will recycle the glass for their course recycling projects after weighing them each week.
  • Yes, you can bring your recyclables from home but they must make it to campus every week by Tuesday to be counted in that week’s statistics.
Our goal is to recycle 10% more than we did last year. We can do it!!!!!
